For many of us, our membership of the credit union began as children when our parents or guardians opened a minor savings book for us. As we got older, we enjoyed summer holidays, Christmases and birthdays thanks to our credit-worthy parents who borrowed from the credit union. In fact, we had it drummed into us that the first thing that got paid each week was the credit union —because your character was your collateral and the credit union was your safety net! Things haven’t changed very much. The credit union is still the safety net for many families and many parents continue to open minor savings books for their children. In other words, they are credit union families! However, in the years leading up to the credit crunch, we experienced a decline in the number of young adults availing of credit union services. Many of them found the offer of easy and cheap credit from other lenders hard to resist. Now, many are beginning to once again save and borrow with the credit union. They are recognising that, even in the face of the most severe economic downturn in recent memory, the credit union remains safe and secure and credit union services and products are excellent value. We would encourage all our members, especially those embarking on a new career, setting up their first household or starting a family, to learn about our products and services and become active, responsible members. We would also encourage them to continue the tradition of opening minor savings books for their children. Derry Credit Union’s Youth Committee run its annual Young People’s Awards as a means of publicising our credit union and encouraging young people to be active in their communities, responsible in their behaviour and develop the personal skills that will help to set them on the road to financial responsibility. See inside for coverage of this year’s awards. We think you’ll agree that there are some truly outstanding young people in Derry!
